What is Shockwave Therapy?
At Advantage Physiotherapy, we are committed to providing the latest, evidence-based treatments to help our patients recover and live pain-free. One of our highly effective treatment options is Shockwave Therapy. This non-invasive therapy has been proven to provide relief for chronic tendon conditions and musculoskeletal issues.
Shockwave Therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate healing in damaged tissues. Originally used in medicine to break down kidney stones, it has more recently been adapted for treating chronic soft tissue injuries. The therapy works by promoting increased blood flow and metabolic activity in the affected area, encouraging natural tissue repair.
Conditions Treated with Shockwave Therapy
At Advantage Physiotherapy, we use Shockwave treatment to treat a range of conditions, particularly those involving chronic tendon issues. Conditions that may benefit from Shockwave treatments include:
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Achilles Tendinopathy
- Patella Tendinopathy
- Hamstring and Gluteal Tendinopathy
- Tennis Elbow & Golfer’s Elbow
- Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy
- Calcific Tendinitis
If you’ve been struggling with persistent pain in any of these areas, shockwave therapy could be the solution you’ve been looking for.
Benefits of Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave Therapy is a clinically proven, non-invasive treatment that offers several advantages:
High Success Rate: Up to 80% of patients report significant improvement in their symptoms after a course of treatment.
Avoids Surgery: Many patients who undergo Shockwave treatment are able to avoid more invasive procedures like surgery.
Minimal Downtime: You can return to your normal activities shortly after each session, making it a convenient treatment option.
Reduce pain: Shockwave reduces pain by inhibiting afferent pain signals meaning you can get back to your activity and sport quicker.
Shockwave Therapy is highly effective for treating chronic pain that has not responded to other treatments. Most patients notice improvements after just 3 to 5 sessions.
What to Expect During Shockwave Therapy
During a Shockwave session, you will be asked to lie down in a comfortable position while a physiotherapist applies a gel to the treatment area. A handheld device is then used to deliver controlled pulses of high-energy sound waves to the injured tissue.
Each session lasts 15 minutes. Most patients require a course of 3-5 treatments, spaced 7-10 days apart, to achieve the best results.
Our expert physiotherapists may also recommend complementary exercises or treatments to address underlying causes of your injury, such as muscle weakness or biomechanical imbalances.
I cannot recommend them enough, and especially Alex, who was helping me regain full motion after an ankle fracture. Always smiling, understanding, kind, he knows and enjoys what he is doing. I am more than grateful for his help.
After Your Shockwave Therapy Appointment
Following your shockwave session, you can return to your normal activities straight away. While some patients experience mild discomfort immediately after treatment, this usually subsides within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol can be used if needed, but we recommend avoiding anti-inflammatory medications, as they may interfere with the healing process initiated by the therapy.
Your physiotherapist will provide personalised advice on when you can resume more strenuous physical activities or sports.
